Girl Scout Silver Award

When I completed my Silver Award in Girl Scout troop 89, we worked on a project in which we made washable fabric menstrual pads for girls in 3rd world countries who are not allowed to leave their rooms while on their period, sitting without protection, on a piece of cardboard on their beds. They miss around 12 weeks or 3 months of school each year, and they are not allowed to use cotton or disposable products, as they create too much trash. Many organizations tried this; however, this actually did not help, as the amount of trash would often get women beaten and humiliated. Girls would try to take others' used cotton products, wash them, and reuse them. The products that we sewed and provided to them in kits would be made out of simple, darker-colored, patterned fabrics with no cartoon characters, sewn together, provided to these girls in bags (kits), and provided to them. These girls could now wear these to school and wash them each day without staining showing. For more information on this, you can visit Janet Young's Facebook Page and scroll down to find the posts. This was an extremely eye-opening project in which I am honored to have taken part. Having experience in Volunteering opportunities such as the Girl Scout Silver Award project, Girl Scout food bank service, Girl Scout helping to create food bags for the homeless, Girl Scout volunteering at the immigration services, where we could see people become US citizens, I feel as if all of this really helped shape me to become someone who loves to help others.
