Due to the small amount of trading post staff this season and the lack of a general manager I have taken on responsibilities of an assistant manager and my AM has taken on the duties of manager. The duties I carry out as a clerk are; Enthusiastic customer service, working knowledge of all products sold, ensuring the stocking of shelves, and POS system operations. My additional duties have been receiving and filling online orders, manual inventory recount to rectify extensive discrepancies left by previous staff, filling restock orders, cleaning after shift, and opening and closing registers and the store as a whole. Other roles I have participated in are trail maintenance, dogyard upkeep, sled dog mushing, gear outfitting.
As the Counselor (equal to middle managing) at the Mountain Man Outpost I worked with my director and my two instructors to perform all program functions we offered, going above and beyond to ensure that we were the best outpost, which was reflected in our ratings. We showed up and hour and a half early to begin preparing for our meals which we cooked in dutch ovens over coals and with skillets over propane burners, during that time we set up our primary program area with our furs, traps, puzzles, games, and our knife/tomahawk throwing range. once the campers got there we entertained them with the historical items and games and then after a half hour we fed them. Near the end of the meal we went out and gave the safety briefing on the tools they would be throwing and the rules of the range, then we ran the range till everyone got the opportunity to throw. At some point during this our director would leave to prepare the black powder range and once we finished throwing two of us would lead the campers on a 1/4 mile hike to the range while one stayed behind and cleaned on a rotating basis. At the range the director took over and instructed the campers, with assistance from one of his staff, on rules and safety regulations of the range and then we each took a station and ran the powder range. We did this twice daily every day.
