This course delves into the historical foundations of what commonly refer to as "Western
classical music," focusing not only on the repertoire but also on its associated culture and
ideologies. The study will cover the period from the early eighteenth century through the
nineteenth century—a time when musicians, intellectuals, entrepreneurs, and audiences played a
crucial role in shaping classical music as it is known today.
Whether or not he/she identifies as a classical musician or listens to classical music at all, gaining a
critical and historical understanding of classical music will enhance the experience as a listener,
musician, and thinker. The topics covered in this course will equip them to navigate the broader
